Jouef: « New rails » track sections

This new range of track sections is a step to go to more realistic model trains. The track section is made with two metal rails shaped which are fixed on plastic sleepers, only sleeper screws are not present. This range of track section, more and more completed, is composed of only one radius in 1960, followed by two other larger radius the following years. These track section range was presented in the Jouef catalogues from 1961 to 1998.

This range of track sections, more and more completed, is composed of only one radius in 1960, followed by two other larger radius the following years. These track section range was presented in the Jouef catalogues from 1961 to 1998. Electric switching bridges were introduced in 1962. Rail profile is 2.7 mm height, this allows to accept any HO scale rolling stock, only the old Jouef rolling stock manufactured before 1958 can "count up" the sleepers. Under sleepers, the following markings quot;Made in France", "Jouef", "for Playcraft", "PATENT" reference, and radius in millimiters and inches for curved track are visible. In the 1960's, Jouef manufactured rolling stock, tracks, for the English Mettoys/Playcraft compagny, well knowns for the Corgi toys model cars. From year to year, fishplates changed from steel to brass, rails changed from brass to steel, in order to reduce costs production. But it needs more maintenance after a long time of inactivity, the steel rails get dirty more quickly.

Several materials were used for the New rails rail profile along years:

solid brass rail profile (1960 - 1979)
brass sheet rail profile (1961 - 1962), for clockwork and low end range electric train sets only
solid steel rail profile (1962 - 1981)
steel sheet rail profile (1963 - 1965), for clockwork and low end range electric train sets only
solid nickel silver rail profile (1979 - 1998)

Under sleepers, we always find the embossed characters Jouef, except for track sections included in some train sets made in Ireland. instead, we find the marking Jouef HDI.

Sleepers are always black plastic made excepted in one case: track sections included in the Le Train Pirate of the Mondes Engloutis train set have light blue sleepers.

It is the first material used for the New rails track sections range from 1960. The initial range included straight track sections, curved track sections with only one radius available and manual switch points. Progressively, the track section range was extended with two additional radius for curved track sections and special use track sections.
From 1961, there is no information about the material used for the rail profile, but this track section range with brass rail profile was avaialble for many years: we can track it in some Jouef documents (recommended retail price list 1967 for Netherlands, France recommended retail price list 1978 and retaillers price list 1979).
From 1974, les reference numbers had 4 digits.

We can find this economic track in some clockwork train sets issued in 1961. This material was quickly replaced by the steel sheet for the low end range train sets..

New rails track section range - solid steel (1962 - 1981)

This material is used since 1962 in order to get the lowest cost price. For the end user, it needs more maintenance after a long time of inactivity, the steel rails get dirty more quickly than the brass rails. Note also that the railways enthusiasts agreed with the choice of steel instead of brass, as the yellow color of rail profile is not realistic.
Since 1974, the reference numbers had 4 digits and the straight track section officialy lost 1 mm, from 248 mm to 247 mm! Some minor adjustments on short lenght straight track sections and issue of a stretcheable straight track section. Under sleepers, the embossed characters for Playcraft are removed. In 1978-1979, the steel track section range was removed after Jouef catalogue 1983 issue and it was replaced by the nickel silver track section range. The steel and nickel silver cohabit several years. Nevertheless, we can find steel track sections long time ago after 1983 in the economic train sets as by example in the train set TGV Atlantique SNCF ref. 7420) in the 1990's.

New rails track section range - solid nickel silver rail profile (1980 - 2000)

Since 1979, the steel track range is replaced progressively by the nickel silver track range. The nickel silver track range had reference numbers ending with variante 58 in the Jouef price lists without VAT. Both steel and nickel silver track range cohabit several years. In 1979, issue of new curved switch points which allow derivation in curved track layout. The use of nickel silver became widespread for all track sections in 1983. Under sleepers, there is always the embossed characters Jouef, others markings are optional like reference number, or the radius in millimeters or inches for curved track sections. Announcement in 1993 of a new generation of switching points with powered and zamak made heart switch point. From 1995, references numbers had 6 digits (two zeros added).
The track geometry is changed in 1998: 385 mmm and 445 mm radius were kept, but the standart lenght became 240,6 mm and 148,8 mm.
